COURSE DESCRIPTION: The course provides a survey of "high visibility" social problems that plague America and the world today. It presents students with systematic and intriguing information about society and social problems they are likely to encounter in their lives and in their future careers. By taking the course, students will develop an understanding of social problems -- their social causes, consequences, and solutions, from the sociological perspective. During the semester, students will be led to examine the institutional, structural and cultural context under which social problems exist. The text selected is inspiring in that it offers a provocative critical view of issues and controversies in contemporary time, in addition to hard facts and theoretical analysis. Issues that will be discussed in class range from social inequality, poverty, politics and economic power distribution to problems concerning family, population, environment, crime, war and terrorism, health care, and education systems.
